PORTLAND, JAMAICA — Ainsley Alladice has taken on his new role as Interim Principal of Portland High School with more than a list of administrative priorities. He brings a clear vision for strengthening the school and a deep appreciation for the people already working to make that possible. For Alladice, the new school year represents an opportunity to restore, rebuild and reposition Portland High, with his immediate priorities centred on four key areas: restoring discipline to the desired level, cultivating a stronger sense of school pride among students, improving the school’s academic standing and restoring and strengthening the school’s ties with the wider community. While acknowledging that Portland High has performed well over the years, Alladice believes there is room for greater achievement. And he believes the key to that improvement is already present within the school community. “Our teachers and ancillary staff can initiate change in the students,” he said. His confidence in the school’s educators is matched by an understanding of the challenges they face.
Alladice acknowledges that financial resources at Portland High are limited, but he refuses to let those challenges overshadow the dedication of the school’s teachers and ancillary staff. Having experienced the classroom himself, he understands the demands placed on educators and the sacrifices they make for their students. He commended the staff of Portland High and Preparatory for giving their best, saying, “They give it their all, 100% and more.” For Alladice, that commitment deserves both recognition and support. His leadership philosophy is rooted in servant leadership, with an emphasis on involving teachers and support staff in planning, valuing their ideas and delegating responsibilities.“I believe that I am a servant leader,” he said, adding that his goal is not only to lead, but to develop others into leaders. That same sense of purpose extends to the students he now has the responsibility of guiding. For Alladice, the transformation of Portland High must go beyond academic performance. He wants students to grow academically, personally and spiritually, with faith serving as a foundation for their development. He views his appointment as part of God’s purpose for his life. “The appointment of Interim Principal that I have been given was from God and not man. God is everything for me,” he said.
As an Information Technology professional, Alladice is also mindful of the opportunities and challenges presented by Artificial Intelligence. While embracing technology, he wants students to continue developing their own God-given ability to think, reason and create. His vision also extends beyond the school gates. Alladice plans to strengthen Portland High’s digital presence, highlighting the many activities, achievements and stories taking place within the school that deserve wider recognition. Beyond social media, however, his goal is to rebuild the school’s relationship with the wider community, creating greater connection, restoring confidence and opening opportunities for collaboration and support. With the school year now underway, Alladice’s message to students is simple: Believe in yourself and put God first.
He urged students not to focus on the “naysayers,” but to recognize their God-given potential and trust Him with their journey. Describing Portland High as “God’s school,” he believes that with faith, determination and a commitment to excellence, students can accomplish what may seem impossible. As the school enters this new chapter, Alladice acknowledges the challenges ahead, but remains confident in the people who make up the Portland High community, its students, teachers and ancillary staff. For him, the vision is clear: To rebuild, refocus and rise together, with God at the centre.
